Introduction to the Toyota Conquest / Tazz

The Toyota Conquest first appeared in South Africa as the Hatchback for the Toyota sixth-generation Corolla.  Toyota had a suitable model but it was only available as a three-door, so it was asked to develop a five-door version model unique to the South African market. This uniquely  South African Corolla hatch was first introduced in 1986 with the Tazz derivitive launched 10 years later as a model within the now self standing Conquest range.

The Tazz was introduced in August 1996 as a "budget" Conquest hatchback.  The result was new front and rear bumpers, new front fenders, bonnet; grille and light designs; the rear door (hatchback) and rear lights. The result is four new models, all badged Toyota Tazz, and aiming for a new heritage with a choice of tri-valve 1300cc or quad-valve 1600cc motors, both with distinct levels of trim and specification.

The Tazz brand became so successful that Toyota SA dropped the Conquest name in 2001 in favour of simply Tazz for the whole hatchback range, along with a styling update and a number of engineering changes  The manufacturers of these cars have found ingenious ways of freshening them up, with new grilles, tail lights, wheel patterns and paint jobs.

 The Tazz models are listed below;

TAZZ 130: A basic entry-level five-door hatch continuing the theme that entrenched the Tazz with SA buyers. It has the 1300cc motor that develops 55kW @ 6200rpm and has a maximum torque of 103Nm @ 4200rpm. Drive is through a five-speed transmission.  Steel wheels are fitted with 155 SR13 tyres. A full size spare wheel is provided on this model and all others in the Tazz range. Brakes are disc at the front and drum at the rear. Seat facings are cloth and the rear seat folds down in a 60/40 split.  Security features include a gearlock, VIN parts numbering and Toyota's secret-code identification system.

TAZZ 130 SPORT: An entry-level Tazz 130 with a slightly more sporty specification. It has the same engine and transmission as the Tazz 130 but includes 5.5JJX14 alloy wheels and 175/65 TR14 tyres, front mudflaps, window frame blackouts, a tailgate-mounted rear spoiler, courtesy lamp with delay feature and remote control alarm/immobiliser.

TAZZ 160i: This model is powered by Toyota's 4A-FE 1600 quad-valve and electronically fuel-injected engine capable of 79kW @ 6000rpm and 140Nm of torque @ 4400rpmk. As with the 1300 Tazz, a five-speed transmission is fitted but with a revised first gear ratio. Steel 5.5JJX14 wheels are fitted with 175/65 TR14 tyres. Front disc brakes are ventilated with drums at the rear. Power-assisted steering is standard on the Tazz 160i. Front and rear wipers, with intermittent on the front, are fitted along with a rev counter and a clock.  Security features include a gear lock, remote alarm/immobiliser and Toyota's parts VIN marking and secret-code marking. The courtesy light delay feature is integrated with the security system.

TAZZ 160i XE: The top-of-the-range Tazz has much the same features as the popular Corolla GLE and to the Tazz 160i spec adds air-conditioning, radio/CD and a rear-window demister.

The last unit came off the assembly line at Toyota South Africa's facility at Prospecton, near Durban, on the 5th July 2006. The last Tazz's were registered in 2007.  This ended a 21 year production line in South Africa, with a total of  245 750 units being sold.
